Top Tips for Working with Hard Gel Polish
1. Nail Prep is Key
Proper nail prep is crucial for good adhesion. Thoroughly remove cuticle from the nail plate, gently etch the surface using a 180 grit file and ensure the nail is completely free of oils and dust before applying your base layer.
2. Use the Right Base
Always use the recommended base gel from the same system as your hard gel. Skipping the base or mixing systems can lead to lifting or poor adhesion. Recommended by Pure Nails for our hard gel polish is Base coat, Rubber base or Flexi Base.
3. Mind Your Apex
Sculpting a correct apex helps create strength and balance, especially on longer nails. This reduces the risk of snapping or cracking and supports the natural stress points of the nail.
4. Work in Thin, Controlled Layers
Hard gel self-levels, but it’s important to apply in thin layers and guide the gel with your brush. Flash cure if needed to prevent it from running into the sidewalls or cuticles.

5. Don’t Overwork the Gel
Unlike acrylic, hard gel doesn’t need to be pressed or pat down. Instead, float your brush lightly over the surface to shape it, allowing the gel to self-level.
6. Cure Thoroughly
Under-curing can cause product breakdown or allergic reactions, while over-curing can lead to brittleness.
