What is builder gel?

Builder gel is a thicker, stronger type of gel designed to add structure and support to the natural nail.

Unlike traditional gel polish, which is primarily used for colour, builder gel can create a protective overlay, reinforce weaker nails and build a natural-looking apex.

Our Halo EasiBuild range offers a HEMA-free, brush on builder gel system that's ideal for creating natural overlays, French manicures and beautifully structured nails.

What are the benefits of builder gel?

There's a reason builder gel has become so popular!

Here are some of its biggest benefits:

• Added strength: Helps reinforce natural nails and reduce breakages.
• Long lasting results: A well applied builder gel manicure can last around two to three weeks before maintenance is needed.
• Supports natural nail growth: Protects nails as they grow, helping clients retain their natural length.
• Versatile finishes: Perfect for natural looking manicures, French tips and detailed nail art.
• Customisable structure: Allows you to build an apex and create a balanced nail shape.

Builder gel vs gel polish - what's the difference?

Although builder gel and gel polish are both cured under a UV or LED lamp, they serve different purposes. Gel polish is designed to add colour and shine to the nails. It has a thinner consistency and is generally applied in thin layers.

Builder gel, on the other hand, has a thicker consistency that allows you to build strength and structure. It can be worn alone for a natural finish or used underneath your favourite Halo Gel Polish shades.

For clients who love the look of gel polish but need extra support for their natural nails, builder gel can be the perfect solution.

How to apply builder gel step by step

Getting your builder gel application right starts with good preparation and an understanding of nail structure.

Here's a beginner friendly guide to applying Halo EasiBuild.

Step 1 – Prep the natural nails Start by shaping the nails and carrying out your usual cuticle preparation. Gently remove surface shine using the Halo Elite Yellow Block (220 grit), paying attention to the sidewalls and cuticle area without over-filing the natural nail.

Step 2 – Apply your base coat Apply a thin layer of Halo Base Coat, avoiding the surrounding skin, and cure for 30 seconds under the Halo LED lamp.

Step 3 – Apply Halo EasiBuild Apply a thin slick layer of Halo EasiBuild without curing. Then, apply a building layer directly over the top, concentrating on creating the correct apex and structure. Allow the product to self-level, keeping it away from the cuticles and sidewalls.

Top tip: If your builder gel starts to flatten, briefly turning the client's hand upside down can help bring the product back towards the apex.

Step 4 – Cure the builder gel Cure for 30 seconds under a Halo Smart Lamp, or 60 seconds under the specified UV lamp. If additional structure is required, repeat the building process following the product instructions. Using the low heat setting on your Halo Smart Lamp can also help minimise heat spikes.

Step 5 – Refine and finish Remove the sticky layer using Halo Prep & Finish Plus, then refine the shape and surface with your Halo Elite File and Buffer.

Once you're happy with the structure, finish with your chosen Halo Gel Polish colour and top coat, following the Halo EasiBuild finishing instructions. Complete the manicure with Halo Citrus Crush Cuticle Oil for a perfectly polished finish!

Always follow the manufacturer's application and curing instructions, use a compatible lamp and avoid getting uncured gel on the skin.

Choosing your builder gel shade

One of the best things about builder gel is how versatile it can be when it comes to colour!

If you're just starting out, neutral shades are a great place to begin. They're ideal for practising overlays, creating classic French manicures and achieving the clean, natural-looking nails clients love.

Our new Halo EasiBuild shades for 2026 include six gorgeous shades inspired by the soft colours of a classic patisserie. Featuring three sheer and three more pigmented finishes, the collection includes Biscotti, Bonbon, Nougat, Peach Sorbet, Tarte and Whipped Cream.

Whether you're creating a subtle nude overlay or a milky French manicure, there's a shade to suit every client's style.

Builder gel FAQs

How long does builder gel last?
Builder gel nails typically last around two to three weeks before an infill or maintenance appointment is recommended. This can vary depending on nail growth, application and the client's lifestyle.

Can builder gel help natural nails grow?
Builder gel doesn't make nails grow faster, but it can help protect them against everyday breakages, allowing clients to retain more of their natural length.

Is builder gel suitable for weak nails?
Builder gel can be a great option for clients with soft or breakage-prone nails, as it provides additional support. However, always assess the condition of the natural nails before applying any enhancement product.

How do you remove builder gel? Correct removal is just as important as application! Halo EasiBuild is a soak-off builder gel, but the bulk of the product should first be carefully reduced before soaking.
