How to create the perfect tortoiseshell nails for
autumn🤎

Close-up of glossy almond-shaped nails featuring brown tortoiseshell nail art with nude and chocolate tones.

Warm, glossy and made for autumn, tortoiseshell nails are officially back on the manicure moodboard for 2026.

Combining translucent amber tones with rich browns and darker detailing, tortoiseshell nail art creates that perfect mix of statement and wearable. And while the design might look intricate, its imperfect, layered finish means no two nails need to look exactly the same.

Whether your clients want a full tortie set or just a subtle French tip, here’s how to recreate one of autumn 2026’s biggest nail trends.

Why are tortoiseshell nails trending again?🐢

Animal inspired nail art is having another moment for autumn/winter 2026, and tortoiseshell is one of the easiest ways to tap into the trend while keeping the finished manicure sophisticated.

The classic amber and brown palette also works perfectly alongside the rich shades taking over this season, including chocolate brown, burgundy, oxblood and other deep earthy tones.

For 2026, though, tortie doesn't have to mean covering every nail. Tortoiseshell French tips, statement accent nails and designs paired with chrome or cat-eye finishes can all give the classic look a more modern feel.

What do you need to create tortoiseshell nails?

The secret to a convincing tortoiseshell manicure isn't using lots of different colours – it's creating depth through thin, translucent layers.

For a classic tortie look, you'll need:
• A sheer amber, caramel or warm yellow gel (Halo Gel Polish in Buttercup or Lana)
• A medium or chocolate brown (Halo Gel Polish in Side Quest or Central Park)
• A deep brown or black (Halo Gel Polish in Cinnamon Swirl or Black)
• A fine nail art brush or dotting tool
• Your chosen base and top coat

You can also use blooming gel to help soften and disperse your darker details for a more natural finish.
Remember, tortoiseshell shouldn't look too precise. The irregularity is part of what makes the design work.

How to create tortoiseshell nails step by step

1. Start with your base
Prep the nail as normal before applying a thin layer of your translucent amber or warm yellow shade. Rather than creating an opaque base, you want to retain that slightly transparent, glass-like quality that gives tortoiseshell its depth.

2. Add your first tortie details
Using a fine brush or dotting tool, add irregular patches of your lighter brown shade across the nail. Vary the size, positioning and shape of each patch and avoid making every nail identical. A real tortoiseshell pattern is naturally irregular, so there's no need for perfect placement. Cure this!

3. Build the layers Apply another very thin layer of your translucent amber shade over the design. This helps soften the first set of markings and makes them appear as though they're sitting underneath the next layer rather than simply painted onto the surface.

4. Add darker details
Now go in with your darkest brown or black shade, adding smaller patches around and slightly overlapping some of your previous markings. Again, keep the placement random. Try varying the intensity too as some areas can be deeper and more defined while others remain soft. Cure before adding another sheer amber layer if you want even more dimension.

5. Finish with shine
Once you're happy with the pattern, finish with your chosen top coat. A high gloss finish will emphasise the glassy depth of the design and give you that classic polished tortoiseshell effect.

Give tortie a 2026 update

Classic tortoiseshell will always work for autumn, but there are plenty of ways to make the trend feel fresh for your clients this season.

Tortoiseshell French tips
Keep the base sheer and neutral, concentrating the tortie pattern along the tip for a more minimal take on the trend.

Tortie accent nails
Pair one or two tortoiseshell nails with chocolate brown, burgundy, taupe or another autumnal shade for clients who don't want a full nail-art set.

Add a touch of gold
Fine gold detailing, foil or subtle chrome can instantly elevate the warm amber tones.

Go matte
Swap the traditional glossy finish for a matte top coat to give the classic pattern a completely different feel.

Try a lighter tortie
Use honey, caramel and softer brown shades to create a lighter 'blonde tortoiseshell' effect, ideal for clients who prefer a softer neutral manicure.

Don’t overthink it

The best tortoiseshell designs aren't perfectly uniform.

Thin layers are key to keeping the design dimensional rather than muddy, while irregular placement will make the pattern look much more natural. If every mark is the same size or sits in exactly the same place, you can lose that organic tortie effect.

It's also an easy design to customise. Adjust the size of your pattern for shorter nails, experiment with different autumnal tones or use tortie detailing as part of a mix-and-match set.

The ultimate autumn manicure💅

There's a reason tortoiseshell keeps returning every autumn. It's warm, versatile and instantly recognisable, while still giving nail techs plenty of room to put their own spin on the look.

And for autumn 2026, it's all about making tortie your own. From barely-there French tips and glossy amber layers to cat-eye effects and gold detailing, there are plenty of ways to turn this seasonal classic into a manicure your clients will want to save for their next appointment.
